Image Impact, a non-profit in the field of higher education received a $5,000.00 grant on January 22, 2021. The grant was endowed by the Focus for Health Foundation for the purpose of mentoring City University of New York (CUNY) college students with disabilities at Guttman Community College and John Jay College of Criminal Justice. Jennifer Shore, Executive Director of the Focus for Health Foundation, described the Mentoring 4 Impact program this way, “Image Impact is helping people with disabilities to learn the hard and soft skills needed to gain and maintain meaningful employment.”
Research shows that only 25% of undergraduate college students with disabilities obtain a job upon graduation from a four-year institution. There are over 9,000 students with disabilities in the CUNY system. Mentoring 4 Impact provides certificate and scholarship credentials to empower CUNY college students with disabilities to become self-advocates and successfully attain jobs and internships. Career readiness components include over a dozen core, foundation, and elective 90-minute online courses based on career management and communication skills. This free program was developed in partnership with CUNY LEADS (Linking Employment, Academics and Disability Services) and AccessABILITY Services staff.
Chaired by Elaine Rogers, Mentoring 4 Impact includes alumni of CUNY’s Disability Studies graduate program. One-to-one mentorship matches each student with a mentor across two semesters, resulting in up to 20 hours of mentoring each academic year. Headed by Mentor Advisor Michelle Bisson, volunteer mentors are trusted professionals from a wide range of industries.
“Thanks to the Focus for Health Foundation, we are completing our third successful year and expanding to more CUNY campuses this fall,” said Image Impact president Pam Judd.
